Farm Animals and ClassroomsCountry Lessons for Urban Kids
As urban children have become more and more disconnected from our agrarian roots, they have not had the opportunity to learn about horses, donkeys, chickens and working dogs on the farms or to appreciate the essential role these animals have played in American history and continue to play today in agricultural life. CLUK - Country Lessons for Urban Kids - brings farm animals into inner city classrooms to teach children about the care, feeding, habits and histories of animals, and how to stay safe around them.

CLUK targets the students in grades K through 3rd in the school districts of Oakland and surrounding cities. We have two Austrailian Shepherds, a Shetland pony, a miniture donkey and assorted chickens as part of our lessons. The animals make it easy to relate well to all children, including those with special needs. A large body of research supports the positive effect of appropriately trained animals on children with disabilities.

Shetland Ponycontributions
I am currently seeking contributions to develop our program that brings farm animals into inner city classrooms. This project will also use the animal presentations as a springboard for teaching standards-based English, math, science and social studies. The project has sponsors and is endorsed by two local veterinarians.
